The Route
The main section of the route is a large baloon loop. Starting at Amersham station, where there is a loop line, with two sidings and the steaming bay, the line drops downhill onto the raised double track section, where it continues into Woodrow station. Since refurbishment in 2012, this section is now double track all the way into Woodrow.
At Woodrow, the Penn Street branch line breaks off, which goes on a short circuit, before crossing the joint girder bridge and returning back into Woodrow.
From Woodrow, the main line climbs through Woodrow tunnel to Woodrow summit, before dropping back downhill, across the girder bridge, and onto the double track section. After running straight along this section, the line sweeps to the left and trains now content with Amersham Bank, which takes trains to the highest point on the line, before dropping back into Amersham station.
As well as two climbs, the line features three bridges and a tunnel, as well as skirting around the back of various trees. Part of Amersham station is also enclosed in a shed, allowing stock to be stored during sections of poor weather on running days.
